Especially the bit that says: "I regularly do this kind of thing and am fascinated by the tools and ideas we can use to investigate, communicate and share" - It 'transpires' your enthusiasm.
And I loved your incitement to find "the best" people to follow, blogs to read etc. Ideas call ideas.
However, as you concluded, at the end it's all about people. Visualisations can be very cool, but the 'why' always goes before the 'what'.

Re: When X is the new why? But yes more short courses and (preferably blended) online courses would help out here.

There's lots of good stuff out there already, the key is finding out where and who can help.

I've got a project going with a number of my students outside of class, the ones interested are there to learn something a little bit different - we'll see if they've had fun at the end :D

Re: When X is the new why? Is this something HE sector should be offering to journalists and, perhaps, academics? Short, online courses to help people keep their skills up-to-date?
But you still have to get over the hurdle of persuading journalists that they do need to constantly update their skills. Can you teach people to get a buzz out of working their way through a data journalism project just for the fun of it??!!

Re: Why are we still having this argument about free web content?

Journalism's rose-tinted glasses only work when you're looking backwards…

Re: Why are we still having this argument about free web content?

Yes, it's funny how people tend to forget about free local newspapers. As I remember them, all of the arguments about recycling press releases, etc, were just as applicable.

Re: Communities vs network of practice

Thanks for the sound politics of managing Tweeter!
